Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Damage at any point in the loop, such as the fornix after colloid cyst surgery, the mammillary bodies in Korsakoff syndrome or the anterior thalamus after stroke, can cause severe amnesia.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Korsakoff Syndrome

Thiamine deficiency damaging the mammillary bodies and thalamus, causing profound memory loss.
