Chopart Joint Capsule (Complete)

capsula articulationis choparti completa

The complete Chopart joint capsule encloses both the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid articulations, the two joints forming the Chopart (midtarsal or transverse tarsal) joint line. The capsules are separate but function as a coordinated unit.

Anatomical Data

Boundaries & Contents

LocationMidfoot, along the transverse tarsal (Chopart) joint line
Boundaries
  • Talonavicular part: around the head of the talus and the posterior surface of the navicular, shared with the talocalcaneonavicular joint
  • Calcaneocuboid part: a separate capsule around the anterior calcaneus and the posterior cuboid
  • Reinforced by the bifurcate, dorsal talonavicular, spring, long plantar and short plantar ligaments
Contents
  • Talonavicular joint cavity
  • Calcaneocuboid joint cavity
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Encloses the two joints of the transverse tarsal joint line, which together allow the forefoot to twist on the hindfoot to adapt to uneven ground.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Chopart joint arthritis produces midfoot pain over both the TN and CC joints. Isolated TN fusion effectively treats combined Chopart arthritis by eliminating the driving articulation. Complete Chopart arthrodesis (TN + CC fusion) is reserved for rigid deformity or failed isolated TN fusion.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Chopart Joint Arthritis Management

Combined talonavicular and calcaneocuboid arthritis managed by isolated TN fusion (which effectively arthrodeses the Chopart complex by eliminating the dominant joint motion) or complete Chopart arthrodesis.
