Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Infection of the nail fold (paronychia) is the commonest hand infection. Ingrown toenails dig into the lateral folds. Enlarged, tortuous capillaries visible in the proximal fold are a clue to connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Paronychia

Acute or chronic infection of the nail folds causing a red, painful swelling.

Ingrown Toenail

Nail edge growing into the lateral fold, causing pain and infection.
