Dorsal Metacarpal Ligaments

ligamenta metacarpalia dorsalia

The dorsal metacarpal ligaments are short fibrous bands connecting the adjacent dorsal bases of the metacarpals, restricting relative movement between the metacarpal bases and maintaining the transverse arch.

Region: Hand & Wrist
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Resist divergence of the metacarpal bases, maintain the dorsal transverse arch of the hand, and contribute to CMC joint stability. They are the dorsal counterparts to the palmar intercarpal ligaments at the metacarpal base level.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Disruption of dorsal metacarpal ligaments in CMC dislocation (typically at the fourth and fifth CMC joints from punch mechanism) allows dorsal metacarpal base displacement. In thumb CMC arthroplasty, the dorsal ligament complex is tensioned during ligament reconstruction to restore first metacarpal stability.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Dorsal Metacarpal Ligament Disruption in CMC Dislocation

Fourth-fifth CMC dislocation involving the dorsal metacarpal ligaments, requiring anatomic reduction and K-wire fixation to restore the dorsal transverse arch.
