Incisors

dentes incisivi

The incisors are the eight chisel-shaped front teeth, a central and a lateral incisor in each quarter of the mouth. They have a thin straight cutting edge and usually a single conical root. Upper central incisors are the widest teeth at the front of the mouth.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Incisors are the teeth most often injured in falls, sports and assaults, and crown fractures are graded by whether they reach dentin or pulp. An avulsed permanent incisor should be replanted as soon as possible or stored in milk or saliva on the way to a dentist. Congenitally missing or small peg-shaped upper lateral incisors are among the most common dental anomalies.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Crown Fracture of an Incisor

Traumatic fracture of the incisal edge or crown; enamel-only fractures are minor, while exposure of dentin or pulp needs prompt dental treatment.

Avulsion of a Permanent Incisor

Complete knocking out of a front tooth, best managed by immediate replantation holding the crown, not the root.

Hypodontia of Lateral Incisors

Developmental absence or peg shape of upper lateral incisors, causing gaps that may need orthodontic or prosthetic treatment.
