Body of the Uterus

corpus uteri

The body is the main, upper two-thirds of the uterus, between the fundus and the narrow isthmus. It encloses the triangular uterine cavity, flattened from front to back. Its thick myometrium and lining are where the embryo implants and the pregnancy grows.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Most implantation and most fibroids occur in the body. Endometrial biopsy and hysteroscopy sample and view its lining when bleeding is abnormal. The lower part of the body and isthmus thin out in late pregnancy to form the lower uterine segment, the usual site of the caesarean incision.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Adenomyosis

Endometrial tissue growing into the muscle of the uterine body, causing a bulky, tender uterus, painful and heavy periods.

Endometrial Polyp

A benign overgrowth of lining projecting into the cavity, causing irregular bleeding.
