Dorsal Subaponeurotic Space of the Hand

spatium subaponeuroticum dorsale manus

The dorsal subaponeurotic space lies on the back of the hand between the extensor tendons and their thin aponeurosis above and the metacarpals and dorsal interossei below. A separate dorsal subcutaneous space lies above it, under the loose skin.

Anatomical Data

Boundaries & Contents

LocationDorsum of the hand, deep to the extensor tendons.
Boundaries
  • Extensor tendons and their aponeurosis above
  • Metacarpals and dorsal interossei fascia below
  • Converges at the wrist under the extensor retinaculum
Contents
  • Loose connective tissue
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Allows the extensor tendons to glide over the metacarpals.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Most swelling on the back of the hand is due to the lymphatic drainage of the palm passing dorsally, so infections in the palm often show as dorsal swelling. True infection of the subaponeurotic space usually follows penetrating injuries, such as a punch against teeth, and needs drainage.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Dorsal Hand Space Infection
