Central Compartment of the Hand

compartimentum palmae centrale

The central compartment of the palm lies between the thenar and hypothenar compartments, beneath the palmar aponeurosis. It contains the long flexor tendons with their synovial sheaths, the lumbrical muscles, the superficial palmar arch and the digital nerves and vessels.

Anatomical Data

Boundaries & Contents

LocationCentre of the palm.
Boundaries
  • Palmar aponeurosis superficially
  • Lateral and medial fibrous septa
  • Interosseous fascia and adductor fascia deep
Contents
  • Flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus tendons
  • Lumbricals
  • Superficial palmar arch
  • Common palmar digital arteries and nerves
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Carries the long finger flexor tendons and digital neurovascular bundles through the palm.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Deep to its contents lie the potential midpalmar and thenar spaces where infections collect. Dupuytren disease thickens the overlying aponeurosis and draws the fingers into the palm. Tendon and nerve injuries in the palm involve this compartment.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Dupuytren Contracture

Thickening and shortening of the palmar aponeurosis over the central compartment, pulling the ring and little fingers into flexion.

Palmar Space Infection

Pus spreading deep to the flexor tendons into the midpalmar space, causing loss of the palm's hollow and painful finger movement.
