The ulnar nerve superficial branch divides into the common palmar digital nerve for the fourth web space and the proper digital nerves for the little finger and ulnar ring finger. The fourth web space common digital nerve supplies the adjacent sides of the ring and little fingers.
The fourth web space ulnar common digital nerve is the nerve ablated in Morton's-type neuroma equivalent at the hand — rare but documented. More commonly, injury to this nerve from little finger ring avulsion produces combined ring-little finger digital nerve loss. The nerve is assessed by two-point discrimination across the ring-little finger web space.
Injury to the ulnar common digital nerve from ring avulsion or direct laceration producing combined numbness of the adjacent sides of ring and little fingers, repaired by microsurgical nerve suture or grafting.
