The anterior subtalar joint capsule encloses the anterior and middle facets in the sinus tarsi region, the compartment most involved in sinus tarsi syndrome.

Anatomical Data

Boundaries & Contents

LocationHindfoot and midfoot, in front of the tarsal canal, around the anterior and middle talocalcaneal facets and the talonavicular joint
Boundaries
  • Attached around the head of the talus and the anterior and middle facets on its undersurface
  • Attached around the anterior and middle facets of the calcaneus and the posterior surface of the navicular
  • Reinforced by the plantar calcaneonavicular (spring) ligament, the calcaneonavicular part of the bifurcate ligament and the dorsal talonavicular ligament
Contents
  • Talocalcaneonavicular joint cavity
  • Synovial membrane and synovial fluid
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Encloses the talocalcaneonavicular joint, which works with the subtalar joint to produce inversion and eversion of the foot.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Anterior subtalar capsulitis is the primary pathology in sinus tarsi syndrome after inversion sprains. Targeted anterior subtalar joint injection relieves symptoms. Arthroscopic sinus tarsi debridement addresses chronic cases.
