Medial Sesamoid Ligament

ligamentum sesamoideum mediale pedis

The medial sesamoid ligament connects the tibial (medial) sesamoid to the medial base of the hallux proximal phalanx and the medial MTP joint capsule, maintaining sesamoid position.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provides primary medial constraint for the tibial sesamoid and maintains sesamoid position during MTP movement.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Tibial sesamoid avulsion injury disrupts this ligament, producing sesamoid migration and forefoot pain. Assessment of sesamoid displacement on X-ray guides conservative versus surgical management.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Tibial Sesamoid Displacement from Medial Ligament Injury

Medial sesamoid migration after ligament disruption in turf toe producing forefoot pain, managed by immobilisation or sesamoid repair.
