Tarsal Sinus Artery

arteria sinus tarsi

The tarsal sinus artery enters the sinus tarsi from the lateral side, arising from the lateral tarsal artery or the peroneal artery, supplying the interosseous talocalcaneal ligament, the sinus tarsi fat, and the articular surfaces of the subtalar joint. It forms part of the critical anastomotic ring supplying the talar body.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The tarsal sinus artery is the key vascular supply to the lateral subtalar joint contents and is disrupted by talocalcaneal coalition surgery and sinus tarsi debridement. It contributes to the talar blood supply via anastomosis with the artery of the tarsal canal. Its disruption in calcaneal fractures with significant displacement risks sinus tarsi avascular necrosis.

Common Injuries & Conditions

Sinus Tarsi Vascular Disruption

Compromise of tarsal sinus artery supply following displaced calcaneal fractures or lateral subtalar surgery, contributing to subtalar joint avascular changes and sinus tarsi syndrome.
