Right Auricle

auricula dextra

The right auricle is a small, ear-shaped pouch projecting from the upper front of the right atrium. Its inner wall is ridged with pectinate muscles. It overlaps the root of the ascending aorta.

Function & Actions

Adds a little to atrial capacity and helps atrial filling. Its wall also contains cells that release natriuretic peptides in response to stretch.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The right auricle is a common site for inserting the venous cannula in cardiopulmonary bypass. Pacing leads are often fixed in the right atrial appendage because its ridged wall holds them steady. Clots form here much less often than in the left auricle because of its broad opening.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Right Atrial Appendage Thrombus

Clot formation in the auricle, uncommon but possible in atrial fibrillation or with indwelling lines. It can cause pulmonary emboli.
