Ribs 8–10 (False Ribs)

costae spuriae

Ribs 8 through 10 are false ribs whose costal cartilages do not connect directly to the sternum but join the cartilage of rib 7 above, forming the costal margin and providing attachment for the abdominal and intercostal muscles.

Region: Chest
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Ribs 8 through 10 are false ribs that articulate with the sternum indirectly through the costal cartilage of the rib above. They form the costal margin palpable below the rib cage. The hepatic (right) and splenic (left) flexures of the colon lie beneath them, and deep costal margin tenderness can indicate pathology in these organs. Slipping rib syndrome from hypermobile costal cartilage of ribs 8 through 10 produces lateral chest or upper abdominal pain reproduced by the hooking manoeuvre.
