Renal Lobes

lobi renales

Each kidney contains about 8-18 lobes, each made of one renal pyramid with the cortex capping it and half of the neighbouring columns. In the fetus the lobes show as grooves on the surface.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Supply

LocationThroughout the kidney, arranged around the renal sinus
Parts
Nerve SupplyRenal plexus (sympathetic T10-L1)
Blood SupplyInterlobar and arcuate arteries (from the renal artery)
Venous drainage
  • Interlobar and arcuate veins to the renal vein
Lymphatic drainage
  • Lateral aortic (lumbar) nodes
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Form the basic large-scale units of the kidney, each draining urine into a minor calyx.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Surface grooves from fetal lobes sometimes persist in adults (fetal lobulation) and should not be confused with scarring. Reflux nephropathy often scars the poles where compound papillae allow backflow into the lobes.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Fetal Lobulation

Normal surface grooves between lobes that can mimic renal scarring.

Reflux Nephropathy

Scarring of kidney lobes from urine reflux and infection in childhood.
