The splenocolic ligament is a peritoneal fold extending from the inferior pole of the spleen to the splenic flexure of the colon, forming the inferior component of the splenic suspensory system.
Tethers the splenic inferior pole to the colonic splenic flexure, contributes to splenic support, and transmits occasional vessels from the spleen to the colon.
The splenocolic ligament must be divided when mobilising the splenic flexure for left hemicolectomy or splenic flexure resection. In total colectomy, dividing the splenocolic ligament mobilises the left colon while protecting the spleen from traction injury.
Vigorous retraction of the splenic flexure during left colectomy tearing the splenocolic ligament and avulsing the splenic inferior pole, requiring urgent splenectomy.
