Suprapatellar Plica Space

plica synovialis suprapatellaris

The suprapatellar plica is the remnant of the embryonic partition between the suprapatellar pouch and the main knee joint cavity, present in 20-80% of knees as a transverse shelf superior to the patella. It may become thickened and symptomatic in plica syndrome.

Region: Knee
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Suprapatellar plica syndrome produces anterior knee pain with a palpable band superior to the patella that pops or clicks during knee flexion. The plica is identified arthroscopically as a transverse fold in the suprapatellar pouch and may cause articular cartilage damage on the medial femoral condyle. Arthroscopic plica resection is effective when conservative treatment fails.
