Pubic Symphysis Joint

symphysis pubica

The pubic symphysis is a secondary cartilaginous joint (symphysis) connecting the two pubic bodies at the anterior pelvis. It allows only minimal movement in normal individuals but is important in the pelvic ring for force distribution. Osteitis pubis produces symphysis dysfunction and pain in athletes from repetitive shear stress.

Region: Pelvis & Hip
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Symphysis diastasis in pelvic ring fractures (open book injuries) requires symphysis plating when exceeding 2.5 cm. Osteitis pubis in athletes produces midline groin pain managed with activity modification and physiotherapy. Symphysiotomy (surgical symphysis widening) is used in resource-limited settings for obstructed labour.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Osteitis Pubis

Symphyseal overload in athletes producing midline anterior groin pain managed with physiotherapy and activity modification.

Open Book Pelvic Injury

Symphysis diastasis from external rotation force requiring anterior symphysis plating and posterior ring stabilisation.
