Lateral Elbow Recess

recessus lateralis cubiti

The lateral elbow recess is a synovial extension of the elbow joint capsule in the lateral compartment, adjacent to the annular ligament and the radial head. It accommodates the radial head during forearm rotation and is the site of lateral synovial impingement and radiohumeral joint pathology.

Region: Upper Arm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The lateral recess is accessed during lateral elbow arthroscopy via the soft spot (direct lateral) portal, which enters the joint in the triangle bounded by the radial head, lateral epicondyle, and olecranon. Synovial fold and plica impingement in the lateral recess is a cause of lateral elbow pain after tennis elbow treatment failure. Loose bodies in the lateral recess are removed arthroscopically via this portal.

Common Injuries & Conditions

Lateral Elbow Synovial Impingement

Synovial fold or plica entrapment in the lateral elbow recess producing persistent lateral elbow pain after conservative treatment, confirmed by arthroscopic visualisation and managed by fold resection.
