Dorsal Forearm Extensor Space

spatium extensorum antebrachii dorsale

The dorsal forearm extensor space lies between the superficial and deep extensor muscle layers, containing the posterior interosseous nerve and artery in the deep space and the superficial radial nerve in the lateral superficial space.

Region: Forearm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The dorsal forearm extensor space is developed in the posterior approach to the radius (Thompson approach) and in posterior interosseous nerve decompression surgery. Compartment syndrome in this space is less common than anterior forearm but occurs in crush injuries. The posterior interosseous nerve and artery run through the deep portion of this space.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Posterior Forearm Extensor Compartment Hematoma

Bleeding into the dorsal forearm extensor space from high-energy forearm injury producing posterior forearm swelling and finger extension weakness requiring surgical evacuation.
