Distal Interphalangeal Joints (Foot)

articulationes interphalangeae distales pedis

The lesser toe DIP joints are the distal hinge joints of the lesser toes, responsible for the toe tip flexion that allows the toes to grip uneven terrain and participate in the toe-off phase of gait. Mallet toe deformity involves fixed DIP flexion contracture from FDL tightness or contracture, producing a painful tip corn under the affected toe tip.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Mallet toe correction at the DIP joint involves DIP flexor tenotomy (dividing the FDL tendon distal to the A5 pulley) or DIP arthrodesis for fixed deformity. The DIP joint is the smallest synovial joint routinely considered for arthrodesis in reconstructive foot surgery.
