Midtarsal (Chopart’s) Joint

articulatio tarsi transversa (Chopart)

Chopart's joint is the functional midfoot boundary, comprising the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints in a transverse line. The classic Chopart amputation at this level saves the hindfoot for prosthetic fitting. The locking-unlocking mechanism: in supination (heel rise) both joint axes converge, creating a rigid lever for push-off; in pronation both axes diverge, allowing the forefoot to absorb impact.

Clinical Notes

Chopart fracture-dislocations from high-energy midfoot injury are complex combined injuries of the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints. Treatment requires anatomical ORIF of all displaced components. The Chopart joint level amputation has specific prosthetic requirements — the long foot lever arm requires careful prosthetic socket design to avoid heel ulceration.
