Calcaneocuboid Joint

articulatio calcaneocuboidea

The calcaneocuboid joint is the lateral component of the transverse tarsal (Chopart) joint, forming the pivot of lateral column midfoot motion. When the hindfoot is inverted (rigid foot for push-off), the calcaneo-cuboid and talo-navicular joint axes become divergent and the midfoot is locked; when the hindfoot is everted (flexible foot for terrain adaptation), the axes become parallel allowing midfoot motion.

Clinical Notes

Calcaneocuboid joint arthritis from calcaneal fracture malunion or inflammatory arthritis produces lateral midfoot pain managed with orthotics and eventually isolated calcaneocuboid arthrodesis. The joint is routinely fused in triple arthrodesis (subtalar, calcaneocuboid, and talonavicular joints) for severe hindfoot deformity.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Calcaneocuboid Arthrosis
