Jugulo-omohyoid Lymph Node

nodus lymphoideus juguloomohyoideus

The jugulo-omohyoid node is a lower deep cervical node lying on the internal jugular vein just above where the intermediate tendon of the omohyoid crosses it. It is sometimes called the lymph node of the tongue because it receives lymph from much of the tongue, directly or through the submental and submandibular nodes.

Anatomical Data

Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Filters lymph from the tongue and the upper neck nodes.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Tongue cancer can 'skip' upper nodes and spread directly to this node, which is why it is examined and often included in neck dissection for oral tongue cancer. It lies deep to the sternocleidomastoid, roughly at the level of the cricoid cartilage.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Tongue Cancer Metastasis

Spread of carcinoma of the tongue to this node, sometimes bypassing higher node levels.

Reactive Lymphadenopathy

Enlargement from infection of the tongue, floor of mouth or throat.
