A small bursa located between the hyoid bone and the skin or thyrohyoid membrane, reducing friction during hyoid excursion in swallowing and phonation. It may develop following repetitive or forceful neck movements.

Region: Neck
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Hyoid bursa inflammation presents as anterior midline neck pain exacerbated by swallowing, palpation of the hyoid, and turning of the head. It must be distinguished from hyoid bone fracture, thyroglossal duct cyst, and laryngeal pathology. Ultrasound confirms a thin-walled fluid collection overlying the hyoid body.
