Common Iliac Lymph Nodes

nodi lymphoidei iliaci communes

The common iliac lymph nodes lie along the common iliac arteries from the aortic bifurcation to the pelvic brim. They collect lymph from the external and internal iliac nodes, and so receive drainage from the lower limbs and most of the pelvis.

Function & Actions

Collect lymph from the lower limbs and pelvis and pass it to the para-aortic chain.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

These nodes are a staging landmark in cervical, bladder, prostate and endometrial cancers, with involvement indicating spread beyond the true pelvis. They lie close to the ureter, sympathetic chain and iliac veins, which are at risk in pelvic lymphadenectomy. Radiotherapy fields may be extended to include them.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Common Iliac Node Metastasis

Spread of pelvic cancers to the common iliac nodes, often requiring extended radiotherapy or surgery.

Ureteric Obstruction

Compression of the ureter by enlarged malignant iliac nodes, causing hydronephrosis.
