Ulnar Artery Deep Palmar Branch

ramus palmaris profundus arteriae ulnaris

The deep palmar branch of the ulnar artery passes through the hypothenar muscles to join the radial artery in forming the deep palmar arch. It is the ulnar contribution to the deep palmar arch and is given off in Guyon's canal at the wrist level.

Region: Forearm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The ulnar artery deep palmar branch passes with the deep branch of the ulnar nerve through the hypothenar muscles to the deep palm. It is the vessel compressed in hypothenar hammer syndrome from repetitive impact on the hypothenar eminence. Aneurysm of the ulnar artery at the deep branch origin produces digital ischaemia from thromboembolism and compression of the deep ulnar nerve branch.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Hypothenar Hammer Syndrome

Traumatic aneurysm or thrombosis of the ulnar artery deep palmar branch from repetitive hypothenar impact producing digital ischaemia and ulnar neuropathy at Guyon's canal, managed by surgical resection and vein graft repair.
