Suprascapular Vein

vena suprascapularis

The suprascapular vein accompanies the suprascapular artery through the suprascapular notch (below the superior transverse scapular ligament) and in the spinoglenoid notch, draining the supraspinatus and infraspinatus fossae into the external jugular or subclavian vein system.

Region: Shoulder
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The suprascapular vein is at risk during suprascapular nerve decompression at the suprascapular notch, where haemostasis must be achieved before nerve release. Its companion position with the suprascapular artery makes the vein a landmark during arthroscopic and open posterior shoulder approaches. Venous haemorrhage in the suprascapular notch can be difficult to control due to its depth.

Suprascapular Notch Venous Injury

Inadvertent injury to the suprascapular vein during suprascapular nerve decompression producing deep shoulder haemorrhage requiring haemostatic suture at the notch level.
