Superficial Palmar Venous Arch

arcus venosus palmaris superficialis

The superficial palmar venous arch accompanies the superficial palmar arterial arch across the palm, draining the palmar digital veins into the thenar and hypothenar veins and ultimately into the palmar cutaneous venous plexus and forearm veins.

Region: Hand & Wrist
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The superficial palmar venous arch may be inadvertently damaged during palmar incisions for Dupuytren's contracture, palmar fasciectomy, and carpal tunnel release. Venous bleeding from the superficial arch is controlled by bipolar cautery. The arch is anastomotic and individual vessel ligation rarely causes significant venous drainage problems.

Palmar Venous Arch Injury in Hand Surgery

Venous haemorrhage from the superficial palmar venous arch during palmar dissection controlled with bipolar cautery, requiring identification of the venous pattern to avoid inadvertent deeper vessel injury.
