Posterior Ulnar Recurrent Artery

arteria recurrens ulnaris posterior

The posterior ulnar recurrent artery arises from the ulnar artery just below the elbow, passing posterior to the medial epicondyle with the ulnar nerve to anastomose with the inferior ulnar collateral artery and the superior ulnar collateral artery. It contributes to the medial elbow arterial anastomosis.

Region: Forearm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The posterior ulnar recurrent artery passes immediately posterior to the medial epicondyle alongside the ulnar nerve, making it vulnerable during cubital tunnel decompression and ulnar nerve transposition. Its preservation maintains the medial elbow arterial network. Posterior ulnar recurrent artery aneurysm is a rare complication of medial elbow trauma and presents as a pulsatile medial elbow mass.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Posterior Ulnar Recurrent Artery Injury

Inadvertent division during medial elbow surgery contributing to haemorrhage in the cubital tunnel region and potentially compromising the medial elbow anastomotic network.
