Posterior Interosseous Vein

vena interossea posterior

The posterior interosseous vein accompanies the posterior interosseous artery and nerve in the posterior forearm compartment between the superficial and deep extensor layers, draining the deep extensor muscles into the interosseous veins and ulnar veins.

Region: Forearm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The posterior interosseous vein is encountered during the Thompson posterior radial approach and during posterior interosseous nerve surgery. Venous haemorrhage from this vessel in posterior forearm compartment syndrome may contribute to elevated compartment pressure. It anastomoses with the anterior interosseous vein through the interosseous membrane.

Posterior Forearm Vein Injury in Deep Extensor Approach

Venous haemorrhage from the posterior interosseous vein during Thompson approach to the radius requiring bipolar haemostasis before deeper dissection to the posterior interosseous nerve.
