Posterior Auricular Artery

arteria auricularis posterior

The posterior auricular artery supplies the posterior ear and mastoid region, providing blood supply to the postauricular skin flap used in otoplasty and ear reconstruction. It anastomoses with the occipital artery posteriorly and the superficial temporal artery anteriorly. The postauricular skin island flap based on this vessel is used for external ear reconstruction and periauricular skin coverage.

Region: Head & Skull
Anatomical Data

Origin, Insertion & Supply

OriginPosterior branch of the external carotid artery (between the digastric and stylohyoid)
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The posterior auricular artery is preserved during postauricular incision approaches to the ear (otoplasty, cochlear implant surgery) — its damage produces postauricular skin flap necrosis. The preauricular to postauricular skin flap for microtia reconstruction is based on the anastomosis between the superficial temporal and posterior auricular systems.

Postauricular Skin Necrosis

Posterior auricular artery damage during postauricular incision producing skin flap ischaemia in ear reconstruction procedures.
