Plantar Venous Arch

arcus venosus plantaris

The plantar venous arch lies deep in the sole, receiving the plantar metatarsal veins and draining into the medial and lateral plantar veins that accompany the plantar arteries. It communicates with the dorsal venous arch through the plantar-to-dorsal perforating veins at the intermetatarsal spaces.

Region: Foot & Ankle

Clinical Notes

The plantar venous arch is a site of venous thrombosis in patients with prolonged immobilisation and coagulopathies. Plantar vein thrombosis presents as heel or midfoot pain without skin changes, making diagnosis challenging. Compression ultrasound of the plantar veins is technically demanding and requires dedicated technique.
