The proper palmar digital veins are accessed for intravenous cannulation in infants and when standard antecubital access fails. They are divided during digital amputation and are repaired in digit replantation — two veins per artery is the standard for adequate venous outflow. Thrombophlebitis in these veins produces a tender digital cord.
