The lateral plantar vein accompanies the lateral plantar artery, draining the lateral sole and lateral plantar intrinsic muscles into the plantar venous arch and then into the posterior tibial veins. It forms the lateral component of the plantar venous arch.
The lateral plantar vein is an uncommon but recognised site of plantar superficial thrombophlebitis in patients with venous insufficiency and in plantar fasciitis-adjacent thrombosis. It is encountered during plantar approach procedures for lateral plantar nerve decompression in Baxter nerve entrapment. Its position alongside the lateral plantar nerve in the medial heel fat pad means both may be compressed simultaneously.
Superficial thrombosis of the lateral plantar vein producing lateral plantar foot pain and a palpable cord, managed conservatively with compression and anti-inflammatory medication.
