Lateral Marginal Vein of the Foot

vena marginalis lateralis pedis

The lateral marginal vein drains the lateral border of the foot, ascending laterally to become the small saphenous vein posterior to the lateral malleolus. It connects the dorsal venous arch to the small saphenous system.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The lateral marginal vein is the anatomical origin of the small saphenous vein and is the access point for small saphenous vein cutdown procedures. In ankle fractures, lateral foot swelling involves this venous territory. It receives drainage from the fifth toe and lateral calcaneal veins.
