Inferior Medial Geniculate Artery

arteria genus medialis inferior

The inferior medial geniculate artery passes deep to the tibial collateral ligament to supply the inferomedial capsule, medial meniscus peripheral zone, and proximal medial tibia. It is the primary arterial supply to the peripheral red zone of the medial meniscus.

Region: Knee
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The inferior medial geniculate artery is critical for medial meniscal repair healing and is protected during medial approach to the knee. Its disruption in high-energy MCL injuries explains the poor vascularity of the meniscal repair environment. It is a principal target in geniculate artery embolisation for medial compartment knee osteoarthritis.

Medial Meniscal Repair Failure

Impaired peripheral meniscal vascularity from inferior medial geniculate artery compromise reducing healing potential after meniscal repair in the medial compartment.
