Inferior Lateral Geniculate Artery

arteria genus lateralis inferior

The inferior lateral geniculate artery arises from the popliteal artery below the knee joint, passing deep to the fibular collateral ligament to supply the inferolateral joint capsule, lateral meniscus, and proximal fibula periosteum.

Region: Knee
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The inferior lateral geniculate artery is encountered during posterolateral corner reconstruction and fibular head procedures. Its disruption can impair lateral meniscal healing after repair, as the peripheral meniscal vascular zone is supplied by this vessel. Geniculate artery embolisation using the inferior lateral geniculate as a target has been performed for lateral compartment knee arthritis.

Lateral Meniscal Vascular Compromise

Disruption of the inferior lateral geniculate artery supply to the peripheral lateral meniscus impairs healing after meniscal repair, increasing failure rates in the vascular zone.
