Fibular Circumflex Artery

arteria circumflexa fibulae

The fibular (peroneal) circumflex artery is a branch of the popliteal or posterior tibial artery that winds around the fibular neck, supplying the proximal fibula and the periarticular tissues of the proximal tibiofibular joint. It contributes to the knee arterial anastomosis.

Region: Knee
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The fibular circumflex artery is encountered during proximal fibular approaches and is at risk in posterolateral corner reconstructions where the fibular head is exposed. Its proximity to the common peroneal nerve at the fibular neck means vascular injury in this region is often accompanied by nerve injury. The artery supplies blood to the proximal fibula and its preservation is important during proximal fibular osteotomy.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Fibular Circumflex Artery Injury at Fibular Head

Inadvertent injury to the fibular circumflex artery during proximal fibular surgery producing haematoma at the fibular neck and potential secondary common peroneal nerve compression.
