Deep Perforating Veins of the Forearm

venae perforantes antebrachii profundae

The deep perforating veins of the forearm connect the superficial venous network (cephalic and basilic forearm veins) to the deep venae comitantes of the radial and ulnar arteries through the deep fascia. They enable bidirectional flow between the superficial and deep forearm venous systems.

Region: Forearm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The perforating veins of the forearm are the route of venous thrombosis propagation from the deep to superficial system in forearm compartment syndrome. They are ligated during forearm fasciotomy to prevent paradoxical venous hypertension in the decompressed compartments. In chronic venous insufficiency of the upper limb (rare), perforating vein incompetence may contribute to forearm oedema.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Forearm Venous Compartment Hypertension

Venous pressure elevation in the forearm compartments from perforating vein dysfunction during crush injury or post-fasciotomy venous engorgement, contributing to persistent compartment syndrome.
