Anterior Tibial Recurrent Artery

arteria recurrens tibialis anterior

The anterior tibial recurrent artery ascends from the anterior tibial artery at the upper interosseous membrane to join the periarticular knee anastomosis, supplying the anterolateral knee capsule and fat pad. It is one of the five genicular arteries contributing to the anastomosis that maintains knee perfusion when the popliteal artery is ligated at appropriate levels.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The anterior tibial recurrent artery is at risk during proximal tibial osteotomy for valgus correction — aggressive dissection anterior to the interosseous membrane level can compromise the anterior tibial artery origin and this recurrent branch, risking anterior compartment ischaemia.
