Anterior Medial Malleolar Artery

arteria malleolaris anterior medialis

The anterior medial malleolar artery is a branch of the anterior tibial artery, arising just above the ankle joint and supplying the anteromedial ankle capsule, medial malleolus periosteum, and contributing to the malleolar arterial network.

Region: Lower Leg
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The anterior medial malleolar artery is the basis for the medial malleolus periosteal flap used in scaphoid avascular necrosis reconstruction via wrist vascularised bone grafting. It supplies the medial malleolus with a reliable pedicle. In ankle fracture ORIF, this vessel may be encountered during the anteromedial approach to the ankle joint.

Medial Malleolus Periosteal Flap Harvest

Anterior medial malleolar artery-based periosteal flap harvest from the medial malleolus for scaphoid revascularisation, using the reliable pedicle to deliver vascularised cortical bone to the avascular scaphoid.
