Intertransverse Ligament Cervical Tendon

tendo ligamenti intertransversarii cervicalis

The intertransverse ligaments of the lumbar spine have tendinous components connecting adjacent transverse processes, supplementing the intertransversarii muscles. The lateral intertransverse ligaments are more substantial and represent true ligamentous structures blending with the thoracolumbar fascia.

Region: Lower Back
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The intertransverse ligament tendons are disrupted during posterior lumbar decompression requiring extensive lateral exposure. Their integrity contributes to the transverse process tension band in the posterior lumbar column. In lumbar fusion constructs, cross-link connectors span the intertransverse space and approximate the function of these structures.

Common Injuries & Conditions

Intertransverse Ligament Disruption

Tearing of the lumbar intertransverse ligament tendons in lateral lumbar flexion-distraction injury, contributing to lateral column instability requiring surgical stabilisation.
