Triangular Space

spatium triangulare

The triangular space is a small three-sided gap medial to the quadrangular space at the back of the shoulder. It lies between teres minor above, teres major below and the long head of triceps laterally, and transmits the circumflex scapular artery to the back of the scapula.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The circumflex scapular artery passing through this space joins the scapular anastomosis, an important collateral route if the axillary artery is blocked. The space is also used as a landmark in harvesting scapular and parascapular flaps, which are based on this artery.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Scapular Flap Vascular Injury

Damage to the circumflex scapular vessels in the triangular space during surgery or trauma can compromise flaps based on them and the scapular collateral circulation.
