Deltoid Anterior Head Detail

pars clavicularis m. deltoidei detail

The anterior head of the deltoid is the flexion and internal rotation component. It works antagonistically to the posterior head during shoulder rotation. The anterior head is the most active during pressing movements.

Nerve: Axillary nerve (C5, C6) Blood Supply: Anterior circumflex humeral artery Region: Shoulder

Biomechanics

Function & Actions

ActionsFlexes the shoulder to 90 degrees; Horizontally adducts the arm across the body; Medially rotates the humerus
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The anterior deltoid head is divided in the deltopectoral approach to the shoulder — the interval between anterior deltoid and pectoralis major is the deltopectoral groove (cephalic vein). This approach is used for shoulder arthroplasty, Latarjet, and proximal humeral fracture fixation.

Palpation

Palpated as the anterior shoulder muscle bulk during resisted shoulder flexion.

Anterior Deltoid Division in Deltopectoral Approach

The deltopectoral interval between the anterior deltoid and pectoralis major providing access to the proximal humerus and glenohumeral joint without dividing the deltoid.
