Talocrural Joint Capsule

capsula articulationis talocruralis

The talocrural (ankle) joint capsule encloses the tibiotalar joint, reinforced by the deltoid ligament medially and the lateral ankle ligament complex laterally. The anterior capsule is the weakest region and is the site of anterior ankle impingement.

Anatomical Data

Boundaries & Contents

LocationSurrounds the ankle (talocrural) joint between the tibia, fibula and talus
Boundaries
  • Attached above to the articular margins of the tibia and malleoli
  • Attached below to the talus close to its articular margins (further forward on the neck in front)
  • Thin in front and behind
  • Thickened at the sides by the deltoid ligament medially and the lateral collateral ligaments
Contents
  • Ankle joint cavity
  • Synovial membrane and synovial fluid
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Encloses the ankle joint and its synovial fluid. Its thin front and back allow the large hinge-like movements of dorsiflexion and plantarflexion.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Anterior ankle capsular impingement produces dorsiflexion-related pain in athletes, especially footballers and dancers. Arthroscopic anterior ankle debridement removes capsular fibrosis and osteophytes to restore dorsiflexion. Total ankle replacement requires capsular resection and ligament balancing.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Anterior Ankle Capsular Impingement in Athletes

Anterior talocrural capsule fibrosis producing dorsiflexion-related anterior ankle pain, treated by arthroscopic capsulectomy and osteophyte debridement.
