The ulnar proper digital nerve of the ring finger is a branch of the third common palmar digital nerve (from the ulnar nerve), supplying the ulnar palmar surface of the ring finger. It is the most radial ulnar nerve territory in the palm.
The ring finger receives dual nerve supply — radial half from median (common palmar digital) and ulnar half from ulnar nerve (common palmar digital). In low ulnar nerve palsy, the ulnar ring finger half loses sensation. Clinical testing of two-point discrimination across the ring finger mid-line localises median vs ulnar nerve territory. This nerve is at risk in hypothenar hammer syndrome and Guyon canal pathology.
Ulnar proper digital ring finger nerve compression in Guyon canal or hypothenar hammer producing numbness of the ulnar ring finger half with preserved median ring finger territory, distinguishing ulnar from median nerve involvement.
