Tibial Nerve Articular Branch at Knee

ramus articularis nervi tibialis ad genu

The articular branch of the tibial nerve to the posterior knee capsule arises in the popliteal fossa and is the major contributor to posterior knee capsular innervation. It is a primary target for genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation to treat posterior knee pain.

Region: Knee
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The tibial nerve articular branch to the posterior knee is targeted in posterior genicular nerve ablation for chronic posterior knee pain from osteoarthritis and posterior capsular contracture. Fluoroscopic landmark for ablation is the posterior distal femoral cortex medially. Accurate targeting reduces posterior knee pain without affecting tibial nerve motor or sensory function.
