Suprascapular Articular Branch to the AC Joint

ramus articularis nervi suprascapularis ad articulationem acromioclavicularem

The suprascapular nerve provides articular branches to the acromioclavicular joint capsule as it passes beneath the suprascapular ligament, in addition to its well-known branches to the glenohumeral joint and rotator cuff. These AC joint branches are the primary sensory innervation to the superior AC joint capsule.

Region: Shoulder
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The suprascapular nerve articular branch to the AC joint is targeted in AC joint denervation procedures for chronic AC joint arthritis pain. Ultrasound-guided suprascapular nerve block anaesthetises both the glenohumeral and AC joint articular branches simultaneously. Suprascapular neuropathy may present with AC joint pain in addition to the classic posterior shoulder and supraspinatus fossa pain.
