The second common plantar digital nerve is the most frequent site of Morton's neuroma, followed by the third space nerve. It is compressed between the second and third metatarsal heads with each step, producing characteristic burning forefoot pain and numbness in the second and third toe cleft. Ultrasound and MRI identify the enlarged nerve. Corticosteroid injection and sclerosing injection (alcohol) target this nerve specifically, as does surgical excision.
