Second Common Plantar Digital Nerve

nervus digitalis plantaris communis II

The second common plantar digital nerve runs in the second intermetatarsal space between the second and third toes, dividing into proper digital branches for the adjacent sides of these toes. It is the most common location for Morton's neuroma interdigital nerve enlargement.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The second common plantar digital nerve is the most frequent site of Morton's neuroma, followed by the third space nerve. It is compressed between the second and third metatarsal heads with each step, producing characteristic burning forefoot pain and numbness in the second and third toe cleft. Ultrasound and MRI identify the enlarged nerve. Corticosteroid injection and sclerosing injection (alcohol) target this nerve specifically, as does surgical excision.
